Come for the Meats, Stay for the Beers at Dinosaur Bar-B-Que |
The beer menus at both Harlem and Brooklyn are mostly a dealer’s choice – just like Vegas, only tastier. This is one of those “If you see it and you want it, then buy it” places; Dinosaur Bar-B-Que’s beer menus are a veritable feast, with seasonal offerings fading in and away.
Dinosaur has exclusive draughts too, like Dino Ape Hanger. Made by the Middle Ages Brewing Company in Dinosaur’s birthplace, Syracuse, Ape Hanger is a tangy, quaffable American Pale Ale with a merciful 5% ABV.
The menus at Dinosaur are written for easy buying. The 20 or more beers on tap are listed under headings such as: Exclusive/Reserve/Specialty, Seasonal, Easy, Hoppy + Pale, Roasty/Malt/Dark, and Wheat/Fruit. You can get beers by the half-pint, pint, pitcher, or in a flight.
Flights consist of four four-ounce pours with prices varying depending on the included brews, but tend to stay in the six-dollar range. As with the menu, so with the flights: Choices vary. City-proud patriots will always find a flight called “NY Represents”. During a recent visit, Brooklyn’s NY reps were Dino Ape Hanger, Blue Point Toasted Lager (great in the bottle; better on tap), Kelso Pilsner, and Sixpoint Sweet Action.
There’s more to a brew than hops and malt, a fact that Dinosaur Bar-B-Que celebrates with ciders. If Original Sin’s hard cider is on the menu, then yield to temptation. Angry Orchard’s crisp apple won’t make you lose your temper. Ciders are not only delicious, but also make excellent choices for gluten-free friends who are tired of watching you joyfully down pints of beer.
If the choices are overwhelming, talk with the bartender. Deanna, in Harlem, knows every brew that’s in bottle or on tap, and can steer you toward a thirst- and curiosity-quenching selection.
