Where to Drink on New York's Upper East Side

by Hannah Warne on Feb 21, 2018 in Roundups

With the new Q train comes new possibilities. Check out one of New York’s often overlooked neighborhoods for some of your new favorite establishments that you’ll add to your hit list for happy hours, dates and more.

If you’ve ever been on a date on the UES then you’ve probably been to The Penrose. The rustic-chic decor, delicious eats and elaborate cocktail menu make it the perfect spot for a romantic evening out. Or, if you’re flying solo, head here for a lively weekend scene and well-crafted concoctions. (1590 Second Ave.; 212-203-2751)

If cozy and intimate bars are your thing during the cold winter months, look no further than Seamstress. Walk through a small shop behind unmarked doors—featuring only a pair of golden scissors—and find this welcoming spot featuring exposed brick, leather banquets and rustic wood. Their $1 oyster happy hour daily starting at 5:30PM and extensive cocktail menu make it a true neighborhood haunt. (338 E. 75th St.; 212-288-8033)

Though the Upper East Side is an unlikely location for a packed piano bar, this spot regularly draws crowds on weeknights and weekends alike. It is small and fills up quickly, so if you’re on the hunt for a table, get there early to enjoy the talented piano players—sing along to the selections or put in your own request. (235 E. 84th St.; 212-744-4949)

If you’re into cheap beer, live music and top 40 hits, Session 73 is your new favorite spot. Offering selection of beers on tap along with the usual suspects on the cocktail menu, the real draw of this establishment is the live music almost every night of the week. Check it out on Fridays and Saturdays for a packed crowd and good tunes. (1359 First Ave.; 212-517-4445)
