Thieves Have Stolen $300,000 Worth of Wine from Paris Catacombs
Beneath parts of Paris lie The Catacombs, a macabre set of tunnels lined with human bones running a total of 150 twisting miles. The Guardian reports that sometime between Monday, August 28 and Tuesday August 29, thieves used these catacombs to drill into a private cellar and steal 300 bottles of Grand Cru wine, the total value nearing $300,000.
The thieves had targeted an apartment building near the Luxembourg Gardens, and drilled through the wall of the catacombs to access it, making off with the wine. Police reported to French media that the burglars must have visited previously, as there was no accident to which cellar they went for.
