Where to Drink Outside in NYC This Summer
It’s that time of year where New Yorkers find every opportunity to be outdoors. Finding that perfect spot to down a couple cocktails on a patio or a roof is so crucial to any New Yorker’s summer experience, and yet it can be laden with difficulties. Never fear, New York, because whether it be a roof, a patio, a garden or even the water, we’ve rounded up the best spots for drinking outside this summer.
Habana Outpost
Open seasonally, Habana Outpost is more than just a cool place to hang out with friends to enjoy some frozen cocktails and solid Mexican cuisine — it’s an urban initiative program with serious sustainability perspectives. Utensils are made from compostable materials, the toilets’ water design is based solely of rainwater, and solar panels light the space at night. These are just a few of the several eco-friendly projects taken on by Habana Outpost, and patrons can get involved too, so don’t be shy and help do your part. (757 Fulton St., Brooklyn; 718-858-9500)
A salvaged floating lighthouse is now the historic and infamous dive bar — The Frying Pan, which is floating in the water off the Chelsea Piers. Open seasonally from May to October, The Frying Pan is already prepared to meet your ideal summer drinking experience. This large boat, once a “floating lighthouse,” is now a bar offering beach bites as well, and it will change your idea of “waterfront” entirely. Earn your sea legs and stay afloat having a couple beers literally on the Hudson River this summer. (207 12th Ave., Big Red Boat in Park; 212-989-6363)
This rooftop bar will bring you 17 floors above the bustling streets of Murray Hill to a rustic paradise offering Spanish drinks and fare that hit all the right notes. A beautiful view of the East River awaits while you sip on crafty versions of margaritas and other agave based cocktails that go great with Salvation Taco catered bites. Pod 39 Rooftop is not only beautiful, but accessible to all, and perfect for a summer date night. (145 E 39th St.; 212-865-5700)
Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden
One of the biggest outdoor spaces in the city, Bohemian Hall and Beer Garden in Astoria is an NYC summer time retreat. Laden with trees throughout the garden, Bohemian Hall’s outdoor space is also a great venue to catch some live music. The cherry on top of this summer sundae, however, has to be the beers runnings $6 a pint and $16 a pitcher — without even mentioning the cheap and delicious sausage plates offered. (2919 24th Ave, Astoria; 718-274-4925)
This hipster haven over in Carroll Gardens invites those who have an affinity for the wacky and unassuming. The outdoor space is reminiscent of a college dorm, but with less grease and a whole lot more welcome refinement. Perfect for the beer lover in all of us, Gowanus Yacht Club offers an extensive selection of brews that were meant for washing down sumptuous sausages right off the grill. (323 Smith St., Brooklyn; 718-246-1321)
Relaxing on a rooftop with a glass of wine? Yes, please. This French bistro located in Williamsburg is iconic for its rooftop setting adorned with trees and its lovely selection of wines and cocktails. While the roof is more for the drinkers, you can also get brunch throughout the week, and a special terrace menu is served on Saturdays and Sundays. For those who want to branch out from the areas lengthy list of dive bars, Juliette is a perfect change of pace. (135 N 5th St., Brooklyn; 718-388-9222)
