Where to Celebrate Cinco de Mayo 2017 in New York City
Cinco de Mayo originates from the unlikely victory of the Mexican army over the French forces in 1862 at the Battle of of Pueblo. In 2017, we celebrate our victory over insane amounts of tequilas and tacos al pastor. New York City is abundant in great Mexican hotspots and to make sure you land at the right ones, we’ve rounded up some of the best to spice up your Cinco de Mayo.
Located with the Dream Downtown Hotel right next to the Chelsea Market, Bodega Negra has cleaned up it’s former self as a London-based, sex-shop themed Mexican haunt and is now trimmed in copper and every so chic. This year for Cinco de Mayo, Bodega Negra is putting up flights of 4 mini-margaritas for $25, a big gulp margarita topped with a bottle of corona in the glass which serves five people, and keeping the 5th in mind, one can soak up the booze with any of their five signature specials bites for only $5. (355 W 16th St.; 212-229-2336)
Right off the Marcy stop in Williamsburg, Xixa is a bar solely dedicated to curating some of the best tequilas and mezcals under the sun and small plates riffing on some of the most iconic Mexican dishes. Try any one of their specialty cube cocktails: margarita or old fashioned ingredients are frozen into a cube and your choice of tequila or mezcal is poured on top, melting into a cocktail experience like no other. (241 S 4th St., Brooklyn; 718-388-8860)
Trained in France and raised in Mexico, La Contenta’s Chef Luis Arce Mota goes back to his roots and exhibits some seriously authentic Mexican cuisine with culinary conviction. If that’s not exciting enough, he’s joined by Alex Valencia of Bathtub Gin and the Flatiron Room, who is also demonstrating his heritage by showcasing his family’s own cocktail recipes. For a less rowdy Cinco de Mayo experience, La Contenta is sure to have you content. (102 Norfolk St., New York, NY; 212-432-4180)
This year for Cinco De Mayo you can get all the great plus a couple of special new dishes including Alaskan king crab guacamole, and it wouldn’t be Cinco de Mayo without a drink special so be sure to get into the Ponche Tropical which serves up to four. Alongside the menu specials Dos Caminos will also have a live DJ, a giveaway, samples, and cool gear too. (373 Park Ave S., 212-294-1000; 475 W Broadway, 212-277-4300; 825 3rd Ave.; 212-336-5400)
Ever since Fonda opened their Park Slope location, its momentum hasn’t skipped a beat. A favorite amongst the locals, Fonda is a must go-to for Cinco De Mayo for their classic Mexican cuisine and drinks too. This year, they’re hosting their own Cinco de Mayo bash presented to you by Casamigos Tequila, which is only $10 all night. Live music by Mariachi Nuevo Sol will also be a treat for the ears while the rest of your senses take in all that Mexican goodness. (434 7th Ave., Brooklyn; 718-369-3144)
Over on the Upper East Side, Cascabel Taqueria has put themselves on the map for being one of the best and most authentic Mexican restaurants in the city. All your favorite Mexican food staples are represented as well as top shelf tequilas and mezcals perfect for cocktails shots. Had enough booze, or perhaps tequila just isn’t your thing but you’re always down to celebrate? Be sure to indulge in their house made agua frescas, featuring freshly juiced citrus in an authentic had pressed Mexican juicer, agave syrup and soda water. (1556 2nd Ave.; 212-717-7800)
Newly opened in Union Square, Camacho’s is a rip roaring taco hot spot featuring day of the dead masks strewn about the walls and miller guacamole. This year for Cinco De Mayo they dare to go where no other Mexican food establishment has gone before by give out free shots of tequila every hour (whoa…) not to mention a bunch of giveaways and sick swagger to make your Cinco as loco as possible. (118 E 15th St.; 212-677-6300)
Hudson Terrace, the two leveled club located over in Hell’s Kitchen may have just won Cinco De Mayo with their rooftop party. Equipped with a live mariachi band and free drinks, that’s right free drinks for those that arrive before 6:30 for those savvy to the password at the door (“fiesta”). This alone is great without having to mention the other bar specials like 2 for 1 Don Julio margarita specials or $5 modelos and Bud Lights, and many more. Party favors and giveaway will be featured throughout the night as well as VIP tickets which gain you access to the Salon & Garden rooms. (621 W 46th St.; 212-315-9400)
The sports bar with the most bar in Union Square that is always down to get loco is, of course, throwing a Cinco De Mayo party. Free mustaches and sombreros at the door let you live that desperado life as you approach the bar to order one of their insanely jumbo margaritas and free cornitas buckets being offered all night long.
