Do a bunch of tense, young professionals huddled around their laptops put you on edge? Are coffee shops among your least favorite places to hang out? Do you like to drink beer?
If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, and you sometimes find yourself wanting to get out of the house to go on the internet, this list is for you. Below you’ll find several bars that offer both WiFi and environments conducive to solitary working/recreational web surfing. Who said beer and laptops didn’t go together? Well, probably the person who spilled one on the other...
Though this bar serves as an equally great place to watch Sunday football (when the season starts again) and sing karaoke, it excels in the “doing work with a beer” arena. A whole, often quiet, back room with tables can harbor you and your laptop while the noisy drinkers sit at the bar. Lots of outlets available. (90 S 4th St., Brooklyn; 718-218-7478)
Not too far away from South 4th, Freehold offers ample seating by day and ample dancing by night. When you’re done with work, you can close your laptop to the tune of a $7 vodka watermelon shooter. (45 S 3rd St., Brooklyn; 718-388-7591)
Oddly enough, this bagel store (and the bagels are good—so good your server will refuse to toast them) offers wine, beer, and a solid WiFi connection. Most people come and go, so it’s not hard to secure a table where you can do work for hours. (242 8th Ave.; 646-638-1335)
Cafe Minerva
Drink a $9 glass of perfectly good wine while soaking up the sunshine in this big-windowed cafe. Italian entrees and snacks will make it easy to stick around here eating, drinking, and interneting for a while. (302 W 4th St.; 212-242-4800)
With a solid selection of $5 to $6 beers and $8 to $10 cocktails, you really can’t go wrong at Berkli Parc. You’ll also find a lot of seating and bright, wood paneling throughout. It’s a pleasant enough place to make mandatory laptop time enjoyable. (63 Delancey St.; 212-966-2737)
This place definitely has more of a bar than a cafe vibe, and therein lies the charm. You’ll truly feel like you’re really just out to hang…but your laptop happens to be sitting there, open, in front of you. (132 1st Ave.; 212-473-7200)
This versatile establishment houses a music venue in the basement, a standard bar at street level, and a relaxing place to set up shop with your computer while eating a pastry you purchase by the door during the day. To wash that pastry down, you can try a Chamomile Rose Hip Cooler or even a Beautiful & Dangerous…or opt for a $4 drink during the regular 5 to 8 PM happy hour. (152 Ludlow St.; 212-253-0036)
This Greenpoint eatery has a lovely backyard and indoor decor to match. The food is great, the WiFi reliable, and the overall ambience reads as peaceful. Come here to enjoy what is probably some of the best food and drink you can get while accessing the internet (outside of your own apartment). (1110 Manhattan Ave., Brooklyn; 718-389-0160)
