Where Williamsburg meets Greenpoint, McCarren Park sprawls (perhaps that’s a generous word) across what looks like multiple separate little parks. One has a track, the other has handball, then there’s the decent picnic spot (“decent” meaning the grass is less patchy than in other places).
After you’ve eaten all your grapes and had all your wine in plastic cups in that decent picnic spot, you might want to move somewhere to get out of the grass. Try these bars as a way to extend your day at the park…
With a huge outdoor seating area, Berry Park is ideal if you’re looking to tan while you drink. You’ll not only look down over McCarren park, you’ll also get to see the entire city skyline. (4 Berry St., Brooklyn; 718-782-2829)
If you’re looking for something a little more upscale and that still offers some high-class views, the Wythe Hotel boasts a relatively swanky French restaurant with a beer and liquor menu that will make your head spin. Treat yourself to a cool evening with $12 aperitif cocktails (like the Americano Highball or Champagne Cocktail) after a long day in the sun at McCarren. (80 Wythe Ave., Brooklyn; 718-460-8000)
On the opposite end of the spectrum from the Wythe Hotel, Turkey’s Nest Tavern represents the quintessential dive bar. You’ve got a Big Buck Hunter, a pool table and the kind of ambience that suggests peanut shells on the floor even if there aren’t any. The beers are some of the cheapest you’ll get around McCarren, and some of them even come in Styrofoam cups. (94 Bedford Ave., Brooklyn; 718-384-9774)
There’s always something going on at Bar Matchless. Whether it’s a DJ set or a 50-cent wings special, there’s a pretty lively crowd here, so if you’re feeling social after your park outing, this is your spot. P.S. The Bloody Marys are delicious. (557 Manhattan Ave., Brooklyn; 718-383-5333)
Enter your German biergarten option. Spritzenhaus offers about a million different beers. The place is also airy and open, which can be just what you’re looking for on a summer day—a happy medium between indoors and in the park. (3 Nassau Ave., Brooklyn;347-987-4632)
Kind of the nicer brunch option in this mix, Allswell is the place where you bring your parents when they visit you for a weekend. They’ll be impressed with the food and the presentation, and you’ll get to take them for a stroll in the park after. (124 Bedford Ave., Brooklyn; 347-799-2743)
Enid’s
Right at the corner of the park, Enid’s marks another open, airy venue. The ceilings are high and the lighting optimal. A food favorite here is the huevos rancheros, but all the fare is pretty decent if you’re craving comfort food.
