What's New For Boozing in Montauk this Summer
Everyone's favorite Hamptons fishing-hamlet-turned-hotspot, Montauk, has no shortage of places to have a tipple. Our old favorites include Liar’s Saloon, Gosman’s Dock, and the Montauket. We also love Montauk 2.0 haunts the Surf Lodge and Ruschmeyer’s (not to mention frozen drinks and tacos at La Brisa). But now that Memorial Day has come and gone, it's time to bust out the white pants and scope what’s new this season.
The Beach Club at Gurney's
Montauk institution Gurney's originally opened during the town's first heyday in the 1920s, and, thanks to new ownership, the grand dame of the area's beach resorts has debuted with a much-needed revamp this season. F&B director Jennifer Oz LeRoy (daughter of the flamboyant late New York restaurateur Warner LeRoy and former owner of Tavern on the Green) has seen that the hotel's restaurants and bars are gussied up too, with new menus from chef Seth Levine (of Hotel Chantelle in NYC) and, of course, serious cocktails. Well, not always that serious: The Beach Club at Gurney's, your ticket to the hotel’s otherwise private stretch of sand, offers several varieties of frozen drinks, among other quaffs. Try the Montauk Vice, a blend of icy pina colada and passion fruit cocktails, with a rum float. There’s also a bar at the main restaurant, the Seawater Grill, and the option of drinks on the spacious deck. Around the resort, look for D.J. Adam Lipson spinning on Fridays, and Elew, a jazz-rock pianist, playing Saturday nights.
The Harbor Raw Bar & Lounge
Another newbie this season, the Harbor opened on what the locals have taken to
Calling the Harbor area’s "restaurant row." The chef is Pierre Rougey, who earned a 3-star review from the New York Times while cooking at Barrique Wine Bar on Long Island—he’s serving a raw bar and seafood-heavy New American grub. Drinks-wise, mixologist Moses LaBoy (Le Colonial, Ginny's Supper Club in NYC) is slinging everything from caipirinhas to G&T’s made with house rosemary tonic. The place is open for all-day drinking, and at night there’s a “midnight munchies” menu to accompany late-night cocktails.
