New York's Best Boozy Brunches for Moms on Mothers Day
After spending so much of our young lives tormenting the very women who brought us into this world, it’s time to give back on just one day of the year. This Mother’s Day, on Sunday, May 11th, New Yorkers have plenty of opportunity to keep their moms smiling with boozy brunch specials from Brooklyn literally into the Hudson River. Whether your family loves to sip on champagne or has trouble tolerating each other without a little help from specialty mimosas, this list should help you find a way to celebrate the most important woman in your life on this day meant just for her.
AYZA Wine & Chocolate Bar West Village (1 7th Avenue South; 212-365-2992)
Though not normally the best option for brunching purposes, AYZA pulls out the stops for Mother’s Day. At just $14.95 per person, ply your deserving mother with all the wine and chocolate she can handle. Don’t worry, there will also be food to soak up all those fermented grapes. And did I forget to mention their five, different signature chocolate martinis?
Bateaux New York (Pier 61, Chelsea Piers, West 23rd St.; 212-352-9009)
If you want to really make an impressionable feast with mom, this restaurant lives up to its name, since it dwells in a boat on the Hudson. With daintier takes on classic brunch options like hickory smoked bacon, golden hash browns, and cinnamon French toast, Bateaux New York also keeps up its liquid theme with complimentary champagne or mimosas for moms while everyone else can benefit from the open soda/juice bar (so mom can get good and drunk while the rest of you stay sober enough to carry her home). Just make sure she’s not prone to seasickness before you embark.
1 Knickerbocker (1 Knickerbocker Ave.; 347-987-3751)
This 20s-inspired Bushwick dining spot will celebrate the holiday with a special Mother’s Day cocktail. Though the nature of the drink will remain a surprise as we approach May 11th, it promises to make an impression considering the restaurant’s usual boozy brunching options, like the Red Eye, which, for $11, will wake you up with a combination of beer, vodka, tomato juice, and a raw egg.
121 Fulton Street (121 Fulton St.; 646-545-6647)
Another restaurant named for its address and with an old-timey feel, 121 Fulton does brunch the way you want it: with lots of cocktail options. Though mothers receive a complimentary glass of champagne or a free mimosa, it may still be hard for your mom to turn down the Cobblestone, made with Ciroc Coconut, Amaretto, pineapple and fresh raspberries (if she has a sweet tooth). If she’s more into spice, The Fulton Mary has achieved legendary status with the restaurant’s house-made Bloody Mary mix.
A Casa Fox (173 Orchard St.; 212-253-1900)
A Casa Fox’s best (yet simplest) drink gets its named from the restaurant itself. The Fox just mixes tequila with passion fruit for a tangy sweet punch that serves as inspiration for its Mother’s Day brunch special, passion fruit mimosas. The menu itself will be concocted uniquely that day, emphasizing a Latin twist on tapas-style dishes that will be easy to share with the whole family.
Kori Tribeca (253 Church St.; 212-334-0908)
Available for both brunch and dinner reservations, this reasonably priced Korean eatery may serve as a welcome alternative to all of the scrambled eggs and hash browns you’ll encounter elsewhere during brunchtime. Also a refreshing change from the mimosas and champagne, Kori Tribeca offers all mothers a complimentary rose cocktail. Served straight up sans ice with a maraschino cherry, this pink-tinged dry vermouth and cherry eau de vie cocktail also comes with a free dessert for your table.
Mezetto (161 East Houston St,; 212-933-4587)
Okay, so the bottomless mimosas are not unique to Mother’s Day, but an unending reserve of champagne with your choice of peach, orange, pomegranate, or passion fruit mixed in will be hard-pressed to disappoint. Classic Mediterranean options like souvlaki and a couple shakshuka plates would make this a celebration for mom that you’ll remember forever, provided the bottomless mimosas don't put you in a blackout.
