The Brewers Art Wants to Hear From Fans On What to Rename its Ozzy Beer
Looks like the litigious Prince of Darkness, Ozzy Osbourne, will prevail in the recent dustup over the name of The Brewers Art’s popular Belgian strong ale, Ozzy.
As you’ll recall, the Baltimore-based brewery received a cease and desist letter last month from the Ozzman’s reps, demanding that they pull his name from the popular brew.
In keeping with the longstanding Belgian tradition of giving similar styled golden ales devilish names, like Duvel, Lucifer and Satan, The Brewers Art christened their beer Ozzy, and packaged it in aluminum cans with a logo that depicts a fist tattooed with “OZZY” — much like the former Black Sabbath frontman’s own — as well as bats, one of which is bloody and headless. Apparently that all hit a little too close to home for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame-r.
This week The Brewers Art announced that it will change the name of Ozzy, but solemnly swears that the recipe will stay the same. Baltimore Business Journal reports that the brewery is calling on fans to come up with a new handle for the devilish ale. Think you have winner for rechristening the brew? Drop by The Brewers Art’s outpost in Baltimore’s Mount Vernon neighborhood and let them know. They’re taking suggestions until Sunday, April 20.
