Best Bars For Outdoor Drinking In New York
Though he put up a good fight, it looks like that cold, miserable crank Old Man Winter has finally made way for Spring. And what better way is there to celebrate the arrival of warmer weather and longer days than grabbing a drink with some friends in the great outdoors? Here are seven suggestions for places to to enjoy sipping al fresco in New York City.
The Gallow Green (530 W. 27th St., 212-564-1662)
Fancy. Super fancy. Whether it's the retro decor, the artful drinks or just the people who tend to spend their time at the top of the McKittrick Hotel (best known for hosting that buzzy show Sleep No More), it's memorable enough to mark on your calendar for the first nice day in New York.
The Half King (507 W 23rd St., 212-462-4300)
Good to above average drink selection and food, but what really attracts the crowds here is the literary cache. It was opened by Sebastian Junger of the Perfect Storm and hosts some of the best readings in the city—though less edgy than KGB's.
Above 6 (6 Columbus Cir., 212-397-0404)
Hotel bars are a breed unto themselves but amongst them, few have as nice a view as Above 6. Go ahead, impress somebody from out of town.
Bar Matchless (557 Manhattan Ave., 718-383-5333)
A dive bar in Greenpoint in the best sense of the word (read: cheap booze, loud music, memorable crowds). The outdoor space is always packed with emaciated smokers but what do you expect from a spot featured on Girls.
Brouwerij Lane (78 Greenpoint Ave., 347-529-6133)
A beer store with a great space out back to enjoy their 150+ bottles in. Not much room in the winter but go ahead and sip on that kriek in the springtime. And then take a growler home with you.
One Last Shag (348 Franklin Ave., 718-398-2472)
Frozen margaritas you can feel good about drinking (especially after a few). There are a lot of dance parties here, but the back patio (with tacos served on the weekends) is an easy retreat if need be.
South (629 5th Ave., 718-832-4720)
Free snacks if you ask nicely, sweet staff and a textbook Brooklyn patio out back. What's not to love at this South Slope neighborhood joint? If you want to get rowdier, head next door to Freddy's.
