5 Local Beers to Drink this Spring
It's spring, so hide away (or better yet, guzzle down) those hefty stouts and Bourbon barrel-aged palette bombs. It's time for something a little lighter. But lighter and more refreshing doesn't have to be boring. Here are five local limited release beers which should keep drinking interesting this season.
Sixpoint's SEIson
A saison, or farmhouse ale, is usually associated with the French and Belgians but this entry from the Brooklyn brewer uses American and Australian hops for a piney flavor. Expect just a touch of the sour saisons are usually known for and enough sweet and malt to wrap it all up. Only available on draft.
Peekskill Brewery's Simple Sour
It's spring so it is time to get into a sour mood, a sour beer mood at least. Wild yeast is allowed to enter the beer naturally in this traditional Belgian style to create a naturally tart flavor. This is a drinkable and dry, easy on the palette sour for those who are a little wary of the wild.
Singlecut Beer's John Michael
For those he'd usually slink away from a lager, is a lager which just might be beefy enough to keep up with your drinking style. This black lager has been aged in a rum barrel to bring it up to 6% ABV and at 45 IBUs, it ain't shy about showing its hops either.
Bronx Brewery's Zinfandel Barrel Aged Bronx Pale Age
The New York brewery offers a hefty lineup of barrel-aged ales but perhaps the most appropriate for spring is its Zinfandel aged pale ale. Five different barley malts and citrusy Cascade and Centennial hops give the beer complexity to at birth. While a vigorous dry hopping (and keeping the beer unfiltered and unpasturized) and then a toss into a French Oak Zinfandel barrel from Brooklyn Winery matures the brew.
Ommegang Glimmerglass
The latest seasonal from the Cooperstown-based brewer is a saison that’s equally as tasty and yet considerably different that its flagship farmhouse brew Hennepin. Brewed with white wheat and hopped with a combination of Bravo, Styrian Golding, Columbus and Cascade hops and a late addition of pink peppercorns and sweet orange peel, the ale offers a clean taste with notes of citrus, floral hop character and spiciness.
