Five Hot Drinks to Beat the Chill in New York City
The weather is getting colder in New York, so it's time for the drinks to get hotter. Stay warm with one of these five drinks that will provide just the kick of spice or soothing sip your chilled bones need.
The Boozy Sweater at Nick & Toni's Cafe: The name says it all. Order the blend of McKenzie bourbon (from the Finger Lakes) and local Andrew's Central Park Honey with a candied lemon wheel, and get a pot of hot peppermint tea to add as you see fit — depending on how boozy you want each sip to be (100 W. 67th St., Manhattan; 212-496-4000).
East End at The Elm: Inside the King & Grove Williamsburg hotel you'll find this restaurant helmed by Michelin-starred chef Paul Liebrandt. Grab a seat at the wooden bar and enjoy a concoction featuring seasonal staple maple syrup and the punch of Sriracha in a pleasing base of gin (160 N. 12th St., Brooklyn; 718-218-1088).
Heat Wave at The Wren: Here's proof tequila doesn't just taste great in the summer. A blend of El Peloton mezcal and Herradura Blanco tequila with cucumber, jalapeno, lime and salt, this alternative to the margarita doesn't mess around. After all, the mezcal's label translates to "March of the Dead" (344 Bowery, Manhattan; 212-388-0148).
Irish Coffee at Fort Defiance: Go here to find one of the best takes on the classic in all the boroughs. Made with Powers whiskey, Counter Culture coffee and cream, this drink is the perfect accompaniment to brunch or great on its own as a nightcap (365 Van Brunt Street, Brooklyn, 347-453-6672).
A La Mode at Dutch Kill: Just across the East River from Manhattan, this cocktail haven has more than a few hot drinks on the menu, including Hot Buttered Rum, cider and hot toddys with your choice of liquor. But if you're in the mood for something different, this drink is like apple pie with ice cream at its booziest: it's made from hot cider, Elijah Craig bourbon and the sweet Spanish Licor 43, which adds a vanilla finish (27-24 Jackson Ave., Long Island City; 718-383-2724).
