Happy Hour Crawl: Greenpoint
A great bar crawl will feature a succession of drinking holes that mirror the inebriation-level and rowdiness levels of those participating it. Whether you're just giving Brooklyn a try or are looking for a fun way to structure a night out, Greenpoint — with its variety of polished and not-so-polished spots — provides a perfect high-low mix for such an escapade. Follow our plan for a crawl to remember.
The Pencil Factory: The whole drinking-in-a-super-fancy-lodge aesthetic is perfected at this Franklin Street watering hole, so start here early while you still care to enjoy it. Happy hour starts at 3 PM on Monday–Friday and goes all the way through 9 PM. You'll find a great selection of beers on offerfor $3 (142 Franklin St.; 718-609-5858).
Black Rabbit: Rolling right along, this 19th century pub also offers $3 draft beers (some restrictions apply) and certain cocktails for just $5 during happy hour, which runs 4–8 PM daily. Grab a drink and maybe even a bite — the Frito Pie is a larger, fancier (also, pricier) version of the Midwestern classic, which will either delight or repulse with its chili, cheese and Frito chips, combo. (91 Greenpoint Ave.; 718-349-1595).
Troost: All that beer weighing you down? Swing by this wine bar for an $8 quartino of house red, white or rosé wine between 4–8 PM, Sunday–Friday. You'll also find $4 drafts, but with house wines way better than average, a break in this intimate, candlelit room is a nice preparation for the much rowdier night to come (1011 Manhattan Ave.; 347-889-6761).
The Mark Bar: After playing nice, it is time to get a little messy. This Greenpoint dive manages to keep the pretension outside. Every day from 2–8 PM, you can take advantage of $3 Yuenglings and $4 drafts, bottles, wine and call drinks. Plus, there's pool and skeeball to keep you occupied.
Tommy's Tavern: This bar doesn't present the prettiest sight, but by this point of the crawl, hopefully you won't notice. Plus, the decor (or lack thereof) just adds to the hard-and-tough aesthetic which — especially on weekend nights — brings loud and dirty punk bands in to rage. Happy hour is straight to the point: 6–9 PM, $4 wells, $6 beer-and-shot combos, $3 Brooklyn Lager pints and $2 Buds. Miss happy hour? Regular-priced Brooklyn Lager and Bud are just $4 and $3, respectively. Drink up (1041 Manhattan Ave.; 718-383-9699).
