Top 10 Bars for a Martini in Manhattan
The three-martini lunch may be but a fond memory, but these 10 bars will have you demanding it make a comeback. Check out our favorite martinis in Manhattan, from the classics to more adventurous takes. Your taste buds may vary, especially when they’re gin-soaked, but we think you'll find these worthy of sophisticated sipping, whether at lunch, happy hour, or late into the night.
The Campbell Apartment: If you're heading through Grand Central Station, this spot tucked in the middle of it all is a great excuse to miss your train. It's no surprise that the classy lounge, formerly the private office and salon of 1920s tycoon John W. Campbell, serves up a seriously smooth martini (15 Vanderbilt Ave.; 212-953-0409).
The NoMad Hotel Library: Get ready for your booze trolley fantasies to come true (we’re not the only ones with these, are we?). Here, bottle service gets kicked up a notch with a bar cart offering your choice of spirit and mixers, plus a mixologist on hand to gently guide you as you play bartender. Or give the Fourth Degree a try, a mix of London Dry gin, Carpano Antica sweet vermouth, Chambery dry vermouth, and absinthe (1170 Broadway; 212-796-1500).
Bua: Given the bottle of McClure's pickle brine currently sitting on our home bar we may be biased, but if you're a pickle lover, martinis at this East Village hang (which feature vodka or gin with pickle juice from the local Brooklyn brand) are a can't-miss choice (122 St. Marks Pl.; 212-979-6276).
Saxon + Parole: Grab yourself a martini at this NoHo spot and it'll arrive accompanied by your shaker's remains in a little carafe. Guess someone heard we like seconds! (316 Bowery; 212-254-0350)
The Red Head: What do you get when you grab a martini glass, add some Plymouth gin, nix the vermouth, and top off with onions and fresh cracked pepper? A extremely memorable take on the Gibson, courtesy of this Southern gastropub (349 E. 13th St.; 212-533-6212).
The Bar Room at the Modern: You know how people either hate cilantro or love it? If you’re on the love side, prepare to love it even more in a Modern Martini, made with cilantro-infused Tanqueray (9 W. 53rd St.; 212-333-1220).
Pegu Club: You can't go wrong with anything at this SoHo hotspot that prides itself on fresh ingredients and juices, but we're especially fond of the adventurous Earl Grey MarTEAni — Earl Gray tea-infused gin, simple syrup, lemon juice and raw egg white (77 W. Houston St., 212-473-7348).
Bemelmans Bar at the Carlyle Hotel: Feast your eyes on the whimsical murals here — the bar is named after Ludwig Bemelmans, creator of the Madeline series of children's books — and then feast your palate on a classic martini, made extra dry by legendary bartender Tommy Rowles (35 E. 76th St.; 212-744-1600).
Gin Palace: With that name, it’s no wonder this East Village bar has perfected its eponymous drink. The simple martini delights, as do inventive iterations like the Plymouth gin and Dolin sweet vermouth with cynar and applejack (95 Ave. A; 212-614-6818).
Booker and Dax: The Momofuku crew certainly doesn’t disappoint with their equally-delicious cocktail lounge. You won’t find cereal milk here, but you will find a perfect martini topped with orange bitters or a red onion. Can’t go wrong either way (207 2nd Ave., 212-254-3500).
