Boozy Milkshakes and Cool Cocktails to Chill out with This Summer

by Jessica Klein on Jul 17, 2015 in Roundups for Momofuku Brooklyn, Surf Bar

You might be surprised by how many establishments in New York City are willing to freeze beer and otherwise morph it into maximally refreshing summer beverages. Ultimately, you should let this list of boozy milkshakes and frozen cocktails surprise you with the range of flavors and ingredients it incorporates, pieces of actual birthday cake and peanut butter included.

Momofuku Milk Bar
Birthday Cake Shake
This terrifyingly sweet concoction actually mixes in three whole birthday cake truffles—solid, circular, multi-colored treats that are sold on their own as desserts at Momofuku Milk Bar—along with the shop’s famous cereal milk flavored ice cream, simple syrup, and Admiral Nelson’s spiced rum. Hint: You’ll be told to drink it in the shop (since it’s alcohol and can’t go out on the street), but if you ask for water, drink it, and put the remainder of your boozy shake in the water cup, you can carry it out with you, no problem. (382 Metropolitan Ave., Brooklyn; 347-577-9504)

Surf Bar
Frozen Mojito
This bright green drink comes in a tall, thin glass with a long straw—the presentation is flawless. We would imagine that it’s the best frozen mojito you can get in all of Brooklyn—well, at least all of Williamsburg. (139 N 6th St., Brooklyn; 718-302-4441)

Big Daddy’s – Frozen Lemonade
If you want a truly indulgent anything, Big Daddy’s diner is the way to go, boozy shakes included. You can go for the cloyingly sweet variety or opt for something more refreshing, like the frozen lemonade, which comes in both regular and berry as well as both adult and kid versions. (239 Park Ave. South; 212-477-1500)

Uncle Boons
Beer Slushie
Known as bia wun in Thailand (aka, jelly beer), this alcoholic slushy is basically nothing more than frozen beer—but what’s not to like about that in the summertime? (7 Spring St.; 646-370-6650)

Rosa MexicanoFrozen Pomegranate Margarita
Rosa Mexicano’s “signature cocktail,” this frozen Margarita is made with blanco tequila, triple sec, lime, and, of course, pomegranate. It’s a different take on your average Margarita—different in a good way, for sure. (9 E 18th St.; 212-533-3350)

67 Burger
Beer Milkshakes
Ever tried beer with vanilla ice cream? How about beer sourced locally from Greenpoint (KelSo beer) with vanilla ice cream? Seasonal beer with a delicious, frozen dairy component? You can at 67 Burger, and it’s a lot better (and more refreshing) than you might imagine. (234 Flatbush Ave., Brooklyn; 718-399-6767)

Sidewalk Cafe
Monkey Business
It’s easiest to conceptualize this drink as a liquid version of Elvis’s signature sandwich. With bourbon as its alcoholic base, this milkshake also includes banana liqueur, chocolate syrup, and peanut butter. While you’re at Sidewalk Café, you can also get boozy milkshakes that taste like creamsicles, salted caramel pretzels, pumpkin, and s’mores. (94 Avenue A; 212-473-7373)
