Neighborhood Happy Hour Crawl: Midtown

Now that it’s actually still light out by the time you leave work in Manhattan (you ad exec, hedge fund manager, digital startup employee, you), you’re much more likely to grab a drink with your fellow worker bees. Time to enter the hive that is Midtown Manhattan to experience the numerous happy hour offerings aimed at office dwellers just like you. For the best deals, tastiest beverages or simply the kinds of places that will make your most unbearable co-worker seem kind of funny and nice, read on…

The Bar Room
With mirrors letting you see your fellow patrons from behind the expensive-looking wooden bar, The Bar Room really is what it says it is. Perhaps because of its uptown location, the cost of food and drink here is on the higher end, but you can get $1 oysters during happy hour after work along with some decent drink specials. (117 E 60th St.; 212-561-5523)

The Ginger Man
Any kind of beer you can imagine you can get at The Ginger Man. Seriously, the beer menu is extensive. This makes up for the fact that there isn’t actually a happy hour here, but that’s totally beside the point if you’re a dedicated beer drinker. (11 E 36th St.; 212-532-3740)

District Tap House
In a part of town that’s not full of the best places to drink after work, District Tap House really comes in in the clutch to deliver a solid happy hour (with a list that’s constantly rotating) and some strong, yet delicious (not that the two should contradict each other), drinks. (246 W 38th St.; 212-221-1822)

The Stag’s Head
The happy hour here goes until 7 PM on weekdays, so even if your nine-to-five actually goes beyond 9 AM to 5 PM, you’ll still be able to get cheap drinks here (that means $5 or $6 craft drafts). There are always 16 beers on tap, and they’re all solid options. In other words, they go beyond Yuengling and Bud. (252 E 51st St.; 212-888-2453)

Est. 1986 Wine Bar/Lounge
Now entering Koreatown (which is, in a sense, in the middle of Midtown East and West), this bar is calling for you to come to happy hour between 6 and 8 PM, during which drinks are half-off. The ambience here is what makes it really stand out, and it does its job as a date spot. So if you have that certain special co-worker… (42 W 32nd St.; 212-563-1500)

Draught 55
Another beer place, Draught 55 offers $5 happy hour beers until 8 PM during the week, which seems like the typical deal in Midtown. This is a good place to go in groups. There’s a full kitchen, too, and the food goes beyond your standard bar fare. (245 E 55th St.; 212-300-4096)

Hourglass Tavern
With a “speakeasy” vibe, Hourglass Tavern’s upstairs bar, Betti Bar, offers the usual Midtown happy hour for those on the West side ($5 drinks of all sorts). The big advantage to going here for your post-work drinks is that it’s not likely to be as crowded as the other places on this list. (373 W 46th St.; 212-265-2060)
