Cool off With Some Boozy Milkshakes This Summer

Summer has officially started, and there’s nothing quite like a milkshake to cool you off on a hot day. But you’re an adult, and you’d like something a little extra in your frothy, creamy drink. Luckily, there are a number of locations in Portland that offer alcoholic shakes. Some offer the option of adding alcohol to their shakes while others serve specially crafted boozy milkshakes.

Here are the places that bring us to their yard. Did we miss your favorite? Let us know on our Twitter or Facebook.

Punch Bowl Social
We’ve recently explored a number of Punch Bowl Social’s craft cocktails on their summer menu, but PBS also serves up a delicious array of boozy milkshakes any time of year. Try the Cherry on Top, with vanilla ice cream, Luxardo Maraschino Liqueur, and DiSaronno Amaretto topped with chocolate sauce. Or try the delicious, groan inducingly titled Celebrity Milk-xologist, made with vanilla ice cream, Branca Menta Italian Liqueur, and Kahlua topped with whipped cream and a mint leaf. Foster Burger
Foster Burger is one of the best burger joints in the city, and the truffle oil fries with squid ink aioli vie for dominance over all other french-fries. The milkshakes here are simple: $4.75 and your option of vanilla, chocolate, malt, or coffee flavor. For $7, you can get any of these as a Cockshake with the addition of your choice of well liquor. There’s also a daily special Cockshake. (5339 SE Foster Rd.; 503-775-2077)

This isn’t your grandfather’s grasshopper. At Pepe le Moko, Morgenthaler and his staff of talented bartenders hand blend local vanilla bean ice cream, crème de menthe et cacao, and Fernet Branca and top it with sea salt and a mint leaf. The resulting milkshake-concoction, served in a tall soda-house glass, is the ideal grasshopper cocktail. While it’s a little pricey at $14, it’s easy to share and well worth the cost. (407 SW Tenth Ave.; 503-546-8537)

Dick’s Kitchen

Dick’s Kitchen prides itself on local, sustainable, and healthy diner-style food and drinks. Like Foster Burger, Dick’s offers four flavors of ice cream for their shakes: local strawberry, house made chocolate, caramel, and Stumptown Coffee. For $9, patrons can order any shake with the addition of a shot of vodka. (3312 SE Belmont St.; 503-235-0146 & 704 NW 21st Ave.; 503-206-5916)
