Neighborhood Happy Hour Crawl: East Village

by Jessica Klein on Mar 8, 2016 in Roundups

The East Village is one of those neighborhoods that’s defined by its avenues of bars and restaurants. To compete for patrons, nearly all of these places offer some kind of food or drink special on a semi-regular basis. The following establishments know how to win the hearts of potential patrons—and that’s with regular, and significant, happy hours. Check them out for some of the best deals in the East Village.
Not quite a happy hour special, this Japanese restaurant offers a two-for-one on drinks daily. The plum wine stands out if you’re looking for something sweet, and it will go well with whatever sushi you order. (346 1st Ave.; 212-598-0135)
Located on St. Marks Place, Grassroots is perpetually stocked with popcorn and darts. Happy hour runs until 8 PM and includes $1 off pints or $2 off pitchers. (20 St. Marks Pl.; 212-475-9443)
With weekend happy hour lasting from 1 to 5 PM on both Saturday and Sunday, Bua’s got your whole happy week covered (weekday happy hours are 3 to 8 PM). Cheap beers and fruity cocktails sit side by side on the drink menu. (122 St. Marks Pl.; 212-979-6276)
Key Bar is serious about happy hours. On Tuesday through Saturday, happy hour runs from 4 to 10 PM and goes all night on Sundays and Mondays—really a great way to encourage more drinking on days where people usually drink less. On Wednesday, there’s an extra ladies’ night special from midnight to 2 AM. And what do you get during these happy hours? Two drinks for the price of one, whether you’re having cocktails, beer, wine, or shots. (432 E 13th St.;212-478-3021)
When you begin to tire of the concept of happy hours, check out this seafood restaurant’s alternative offering. Every Tuesday through the end of March, The Mermaid Inn is selling a lobster sandwich and a beer for $24 (which may not feel super cheap, but you have to consider that the lobster roll alone is usually $29). Also, nightly happy hour lasts from 5 to 7 PM and goes until close on Mondays, during which time cocktails are all $8 and beers are $5. (96 2nd Ave.; 212-674-5870)

The 13th Step

Instead of offering two drinks for the price of one, this East Village sports bar gives you one drink for half the price during its happy hours. Those hours take place all day until 8 PM, Monday through Friday, with other drink specials sprinkled in throughout the week—like Wednesday night’s $4 shots and Tuesday’s $9 pitchers. (149 2nd Ave.; 212-228-8020)
